A real build, warts and all

WHAT CAN A NOVICE BUILD WITH GPT?

Quite a lot, provided the novice brings taste, patience and the occasional willingness to tell the machine the duck is the wrong colour.

Richard brought the universe.

Richard Davies arrived with four published stories, complete audiobooks, a red Cosmic Duck, merchandise artwork, a quiz concept and more ideas than a sensible project board could safely hold. He had decades of design experience and plenty of technology curiosity, but he was not a professional web developer.

GPT helped build the scaffolding.

Working conversationally with ChatGPT and Codex, Richard turned those materials into a production Next.js website: books and audio, a deterministic twelve-question quiz, merchandise and colour choices, a cart, social sharing, a book-art gallery, custom quote previews, permanent watermarks, structured metadata and a deployment pipeline.

The important bit was not one magical prompt. It was the back-and-forth: Richard judging the work, rejecting weak ideas, correcting continuity, supplying real files and deciding what deserved to exist. AI accelerated the making; it did not replace authorship or judgement.

What the project demonstrates.

Original vision stays human

The books, humour, artwork direction and commercial decisions belong to Richard.

Technical barriers can shrink

Plain-language collaboration produced tested code and a live cloud deployment.

Verification still matters

Features were built, tested, visually inspected and checked again on the public site.

Useful questions.

Did AI write The Naked Universe books?

No. Richard Davies is the author and creative source. AI helped organise files, shape website copy, build code, test features and prepare the digital presentation.

Was Richard a professional software developer?

No. He came to the project as an author, former building designer and tech-savvy hobbyist with ideas, assets and enough curiosity to keep asking the next useful question.

What did GPT help build?

The collaboration produced a Next.js website, deterministic quiz, book and merchandise catalogue, shopping cart, gallery quote composer, watermarked sharing tools, accessibility work, structured search data and deployment checks.

Is this an official OpenAI showcase?

No. It is an independent working case study describing Richard's experience using OpenAI products. It is not sponsored, endorsed or commissioned by OpenAI.

Independent project disclosure: The Naked Universe is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by OpenAI. ChatGPT, Codex and GPT are referenced descriptively as tools used in the build.
